Simon Says Lighting Design

Twelfth Night

November 2003

This is the first production of Twelfth Night I designed. Produced at the University of Evansville in the fall of 2003, we performed this show in rep with Cabaret. I designed this show and also worked the designer of the other show to develop a rep plot for the two.

The director chose to take a very fantastical approach to the show, after recently seeing Mystere for the first time. We chose to represent Illyria as a place that was borderline absurd, but loosely based in reality, so we settled on turn on turn of the century Greece as a locale, with it’s mix of modern and history, and it’s still flamboyant costumes of the time. As such the lighting design lent itself to be very bright light the high Mediterranean sun, but also to be very colorful. There was a lot of texture on the set already, so my use of pattern was very limited so that it would not be over imposing.
